Kupuna Event 2011
‘Come, follow the call of the Ancient
drum.
Immerse yourself in the expression of Self,
Mimic the wisdom of Ancestors and Nature.
Join us in the celebration of
the Universe and Yourself,
of Hula, Chant, Mana Lomi, Ka’alele Au, Romi Kaparere.
Come, follow the call of the Ancient drum.’
This event is anticipated for June
2011, beginning with traveling from Halau Nuholani in Byron Shire
to the Dreaming Festival, where we hold student clinic and will
practise and perform some dances.
Then a bus will take us up the coast
to North QLD to share Ancient dance with Aboriginal dance
groups and place a pohaku at the Gulf of Carpentaria where Polynesian
canoes first landed on Australian land.
The
mana (life force) of the Hawaiian people is felt in the chants
and dances from ka wā kahiko (ancient times). As a participant
of our explorations of indigenous wisdom, you will experience
the power of expression- in chanting, dancing and harnessing natural
materials to adorn your body. As the language and power of the
chants unfold, you will begin to understand the nuances of the
Hawaiian and Aboriginal way of thinking. It is all connected,
just as we are all connected.

ways of his Polynesian ancestors, their language and their culture.

honored to be chosen as one of three kumu who blessed the launching

marked the resurgence of interest in Hawaiian culture.
Tau`a’s towering achievements are matched by his humility,
an important Hawaiian cultural value.

hula and chant throughout his adult life and is often called on
to judge major hula competitions throughout the islands.
